From a local crisis to a global success model
Israel is a model for water resource management, yet its education system lacks a serious approach to this subject. Beautiful Israel believes that we can increase awareness of Israel’s water breakthroughs, cultivate national pride and advance regional cooperation to ensure that future generations become active agents for safeguarding this crucial natural resource.
Our six-session “Water Resource” program reviews Israel’s achievements and highlights their potential for addressing the entire region’s water-related challenges. The program, for 4th, 5th and 10th graders, begins with a general overview of water as a scarce global resource, then zooms-in on Israel as a case-study, covering the natural reasons for the lack of water in the Middle East and our domestic, agricultural and industrial water consumption habits. Later sessions focus on action and personal responsibility, emphasizing sustainability. 10th graders also conduct a research project in Water Management.
Israel’s giant leap in water technology (including drip irrigation, sewage water reuse and the desalination plants that have transformed it into a water powerhouse) has tremendous geopolitical ramifications, including regional co-operation in water-resource management. Therefore, the program includes a joint session between Israeli and Palestinian students, exploring the benefits of collaboration for solving our neighbors’ water crisis. Held at the Beautiful Israel complex in Tel Aviv, it provides an extensive study tour of the Yarkon stream, an experiential workshop in our unique, sustainability-oriented Outlook Visitors Center and a final competitive group project. A graduation ceremony takes place in the presence of Palestinian and Israeli officials.
This successful model can become a bridge to coexistence. But, in order to bring it to schools throughout the country it must be offered free of charge.
